![]() One of the first watches to make an appearance on the scene is a vintage (not in those years) steel and yellow gold Rolex Datejust. If you enjoy watch spotting in movies here you have our article dedicated to all the watches in Mad Men What clocks can be seen? Mark Hanna’s Rolex Datejust (Matthew McConaughey) ![]() Precisely for this reason, The Wolf of Wall Street is replete with scenes in which Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his business partner Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill) display watches that are, dare I say it, quite “typical”. Obviously, when money is an important issue in a film, watches become a key symbolic element to represent its characters, Martin Scorsese knows this well. Well, may be until before the circle of crime and drugs took over, leading to several near-deaths and eventually jail time. ![]() Let’s face it, we’ve all imagined ourselves at least once in Jordan Belfort’s shoes. It is the true story of New Yorker Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) who goes from being an aspiring broker to founding a brokerage firm based on an extensive scam scheme that earns him millions of dollars. If there is a film made in the past 10 years that has marked an era, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) is surely among the first on the list. ![]() ![]() ![]() But despite the recurring appearance of a ghostly apparition that really didn’t work for me, we spend the bulk of our time in the land of the living, for at its core Fatal Hunt is an action-packed thriller. My interests lie more in the traditional hard-boiled detective, police procedural, and darker crime thriller domains. I understand that, but perhaps my preference for logic and realistic explains my reticence to delve into the whimsical. Subgenre fusion in the realm of crime fiction is gaining popularity among authors these days, since it’s used by many to help their work stand out. ![]() Also, Fatal Hunt features romance prominently, another genre I’m largely disinterested in reading. I usually avoid books featuring otherworldly characters. First, this book delves into the paranormal, a realm I’m less than enamored with. There was a lot I liked about Fatal Hunt by Michelle Godard-Richer, although the book is a slight departure from my usual dark, brooding crime fiction reading. ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to scholarships at Bread Loaf, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, the Frost Place Seminar, and Kenyon Review Writers Workshop, Clark is the winner of the 2020 Kate Tufts Discovery Award. The Kenyon Review described Tiana Clark’s I Can’t Talk About the Trees Without the Blood as a book that “unearths what many have hoped to obscure and demands recognition for the fact that the echoes of slavery, segregation, and racism are not only in existence, but in fact, maintain our country’s personal and political realities today.” That book won the 2017 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize, and Clark’s first book, Equilibrium, was selected by Afaa Michael Weaver for the 2016 Frost Place Chapbook Competition. ![]() ![]() ![]() Even if it means lying to the people she loves. To be in love and to say nothing about it – this seems to me the most elegant (and perhaps the only sensible) form of romantic attachment. Translated by Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Cavanagh John Burnside I always love it when a poet enters through invisible doors. When she brings to our attention the easiness we feel in the absence of the raw emotions of love, our hearts and minds travel immediately to the opposite sweet uneasiness when love shakes our whole existence. ![]() I am fascinated by her poem "Thank-You Note", where she expresses gratitude for "those I don't love" because "from a rendezvous to a letter / is just a few days or weeks, / not an eternity."Īs in all her work, the magic in this poem derives from Szymborska's unconventional approach to her theme.
